David Puttnam's post-lunch speech to the conference delegates, provoked a response from the BBC. The corporation agreed that it had decided to cut a six-figure sum from its subvention to the NFTS for two years, arguing that, among other things, the imminent need to prepare for digital television made new demand on funds. Puttnam feared that where they led, ITV might follow. As the conference continued this debate remained unresolved.
